We make sure that our employees, suppliers and HMRC are paid accurately and on time, measure our financial performance, report to the business and our shareholders and work closely with business managers to drive financial control across the organisation and provide them with management information, insight and support.

Our department strives to ensure strong financial control across the business, to ensure that information is right first time, that we have one version of the truth and that our people are developed through strong performance management.

It is important that our people develop an understanding of the business, as well as finance. Many of the department will visit the pubs through mystery calls and, where appropriate, spend time with the operations team to understand business issues and how finance can support.

Ben Whitley – Senior Finance Manager – Financial Controller

I started at Wetherspoon on the pub management development scheme, learning all about how to run a pub. I then spent five years working as a retail auditor, ensuring that standards in our pubs were up to scratch. I then joined finance and worked in the cash-control team, before moving on to work in (and later manage) the management accounts team. I’m now a financial controller, and the variation of experience which I have gathered from all of these roles has really been invaluable to me. It’s great to learn new things and understand different aspects of the business. The company is very focused on training its staff to be able to do their job to the best of their ability. More than this, though, it recognises people’s ambitions to progress in their career and ensures that training schemes are in place to facilitate their goals.
