If a legal problem does arise, it is the legal team’s job to ensure that it is resolved with the best-possible outcome for the company.

The team deals with a wide range of legal areas, including litigation, planning, property, contracts, data protection, health & safety, licensing and regulatory law. No two days are ever the same.
The team plays a key role in assisting with the expansion of the company, by obtaining the necessary planning permission, licences and permits required to enable the pubs to sell alcohol, provide entertainment and operate gaming machines.

Katie Sullivan – Trainee Solicitor

I started my Wetherspoon career as a bar associate, while studying law at university. I was then able to complete my legal practice course, while working in the pub. I became aware of an opportunity to work in the legal department, as a paralegal in insurance, and jumped at the chance to continue working for the company. I loved the passion and enthusiasm which came across during my interview and was so excited to join the legal team. The work is exciting and varied – and the expertise of the in-house lawyers is second to none.

The Wetherspoon culture is to promote from within the company – and they really nurture and support their staff. It’s so inspiring to know that a lot of senior management began their career in the pubs. The training opportunities are fantastic; last year, I was fortunate enough to achieve one of my career goals – to train as a solicitor with Wetherspoon. So far, I have worked in property and commercial litigation and am looking forward to my move to licensing soon. The company is also giving me the opportunity to work in a city law firm, next year, on secondment.
