The retail auditors visit each of our pubs to ensure that the company is running a clean, safe, profitable businesses. They aim to assess how effective our pubs’ controls are, in relation to stock management, cash control, health & safety and food safety, as well as ensuring that we adhere to all relevant legislation.

The retail auditors also help with pub managers’ training, delivering the stock management training course and a food safety course for all kitchen managers attending our catering academy – part of our award-winning training programme. They also assist with all new pub openings, by visiting the site on the opening day to ensure that the pub is ready to trade!

All of the retail auditors complete the advanced health & safety and food safety qualifications with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health. Several of the department members have completed additional training with the Institute of Internal Auditors, as well as completing the J D Wetherspoon Diploma in Licensed Retail Management.

Mark Latham – Retail Audit Manager

I joined the pub industry and J D Wetherspoon in 1998 as an auditor, having worked previously in retail. I am now responsible of the day-to-day management of the retail audit team. Key activities undertaken by retail audit include the reconciliation of stock and cash, in the pub estate, along with a comprehensive review of the pubs’ food hygiene and health & safety management. The company’s culture is fantastic, always recognising results and achievements. This is one of the main reasons why we have so many senior managers who have progressed through the ranks.
