Wetherspoon has been recognised for its commitment to training and developing employees, with particular praise being given to the graduate-level training provided for its staff.
The company won the People Development trophy in the annual Hero and Icon Awards, hosted by Peach Factory, the leisure consultancy and publishing group.
To date, more than 300 of its staff have undertaken the graduate-level training in the past eight years, staged in association with Leeds Metropolitan University.
Wetherspoon scooped the prize against impressive competition: Nando’s, Peach Pub Co,PizzaExpress and Spirit Pub Co.
The award to Wetherspoon was one of just eight presented to companies in the hospitality sector.
Peach’s chief executive officer, Peter Martin, said: “These are the brands, companies and individuals that have impressed most over the year – and it is clear from our winners that there is no shortage of inspirational leadership in the business.”
Wetherspoon’s personnel and legal director, Su Cacioppo, said: “We are extremely proud of our training programme, highlighting our overriding commitment to having the best staff in the industry.
“The award is wonderful recognition of that and is especially pleasing, as we were pitted against other respected companies in the sector.”
