The Head
Office Team
Mark
Retail Audit Manager
"I joined the pub industry and J D Wetherspoon in 1998 as an auditor, having worked previously in retail. I am now responsible of the day-to-day management of the retail audit team. Key activities undertaken by retail audit include the reconciliation of stock and cash, in the pub estate, along with a comprehensive review of the pubs’ food hygiene and health & safety management. The company’s culture is fantastic, always recognising results and achievements. This is one of the main reasons why we have so many senior managers who have progressed through the ranks."
Gill
Area Manager
"I started my career at one of our Wetherspoon pubs as a shift manager and, over time, with lots of training and support, I was appointed as pub manager. I was lucky enough to have run two pubs, before completing the area manager development day and being promoted to trainee area manager. After completing a five-month training programme, I am now a qualified area manager, looking after my own area, where I help to support the pubs, to ensure that we deliver the company’s sales and targets – through developing, training and ensuring that our pubs are the best places to work and visit."
Caroline
Property & Maintenance Team Leader
"I first stepped through the doors of J D Wetherspoon’s head office back in 2005, as a maintenance co-ordinator. My role involved helping to support the pubs and contractors with all of their maintenance issues. Within the six years I’ve been here, I have seen the estate practically double in size and seen my own development progress to team leader. I’ve got to say that Wetherspoon is one of the best companies I have worked for – and I put the winning formula down to its work ethics, great atmosphere and exceptional benefits."
Lewis
Purchasing Manager
"I started my career at Wetherspoon 10 years ago as a pot-washer in the kitchen of my university town - Portsmouth. As a student, I needed flexibility with my hours and travel, which Wetherspoon was happy to accommodate. I now work in the head-office commercial team as the food purchasing manager, responsible for the maintenance of our food relationships, as well as negotiating new product listings and cost-savings for the business. I am very proud of my career so far in Wetherspoon. I also have a lot of loyalty in place, as the business continues to support me and my abilities. If you are thinking of joining Wetherspoon, my advice would be to work hard... and you will be recognised and rewarded - I did."
Matt
Assistant Food Development Manager
"I started my career at Wetherspoon as a kitchen associate and very quickly worked my way up the ladder, being promoted to food-development manager in the head-office catering team. Every day is completely different for me; it feels great being in a position to use my experience to offer daily support to individual pubs. Walking in a Wetherspoon and seeing a menu which you have launched is pretty cool as well. Wetherspoon also has a fantastic training programme. There is so much to learn, with the structured way in which information is given meaning that you learn at a pace which ensures progression."
Dapo
2nd Line IT Support
"I began my career at Wetherspoon over two years ago as second-line IT support, responsible for supporting the company's IT systems and networks, across the pubs and head office. Since starting, my role has expanded a lot more, and I've gained valuable experience, especially getting involved in other projects - which I find extremely exciting. With the company rapidly expanding and the fantastic staff rewards scheme, I think that it's a very exciting time for anyone who is thinking about starting a career at Wetherspoon."
Adrian
Customer Service Administrator
"I joined Wetherspoon as a part-time temp, to fill university holidays. Since then, I have come to realise that this is a fantastic company to work for, with great working ethics and a positive working atmosphere. Working at this company is far better than any previous jobs I've had, with my colleagues both supportive and very positive about work. There are many perks of the job to reward all staff members, helping to motive everyone to work at their best. They have a very extensive training programme across the company, if you wish to move forward and expand your knowledge. The company is very willing to help you and advise you about how to achieve your goals."
Katy
Regional Personnel Manager
"I joined Wetherspoon in 2001 as a bar associate. Through hard work and dedication, I quickly became a pub manager and then worked as a training manager, before moving into my current role as regional personnel manager, supporting 120 pubs with recruitment, training and employee relations. Wetherspoon is a brilliant company to work for and it really looks after its staff. With the expansion envisaged over the next five years, I think that it's a really exciting time for everyone involved in Wetherspoon."
Ben
Senior Finance Manager
"I started at Wetherspoon on the pub management development scheme, learning all about how to run a pub. I then spent five years working as a retail auditor, ensuring that standards in our pubs were up to scratch. I then joined finance and worked in the cash-control team, before moving on to work in (and later manage) the management accounts team. I'm now a financial controller, and the variation of experience which I have gathered from all of these roles has really been invaluable to me. The company is very focused on training its staff to be able to do their job to the best of their ability. More than this, though, it recognises people's ambitions to progress in their career and ensures that training schemes are in place to facilitate their goals."
